Biography
Kalyan Majumdar stands out as a leading young sitarist on today’s classical music circuit, admired for his clarity of tone, disciplined approach, and emotional depth. Born into a musical family, he displayed rare talent from early childhood, identifying ragas and reproducing notations when he was only three years old. At the age of four, he began formal sitar training under his father, Pandit Subhajit Majumdar of the Senia Maihar gharana. His musical journey continued under Pandit Soumitra Lahiri and the legendary sarod maestro Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta. He is presently a scholar of the ITC Sangeet Research Academy, receiving advanced guidance from Pandit Partho Chatterjee.
Kalyan is a regular performer on the professional concert circuit and is an empanelled artist of All India Radio, Kolkata, and Doordarshan. He is also an empanelled artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Government of India. His major honors include first position in the All India Radio Music Competition in 2015 with the President’s Award, the National Scholarship from the Ministry of Culture, the Ravi Koppikar Memorial Award, the Citi–NCPA Scholarship, first prize at the Rajya Yuva Utsav of West Bengal, the Telegraph Award with gold medal, and victory at the Dover Lane Talent Search Contest with the Nikhil Banerjee Memorial Trophy. In 2016, Sangeet Kala Kendra, Agra, conferred upon him the title “Naad Sadhak.”
His performance career spans prestigious platforms across India and overseas, including Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society, Singapore Tagore Society, Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan, India International Centre, National Centre for the Performing Arts, Epicentre Gurgaon, India Habitat Centre, Dover Lane Music Conference, IIM Lucknow (Noida Campus), and many leading cultural institutions. His music has also been broadcast internationally, including on Gorgeous Radio, UK.
Deeply inspired by Pandit Nikhil Banerjee, Kalyan draws from that lineage of introspective and expansive sitar playing. His artistry has been praised by senior maestros, including Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta, and reviewed by leading newspapers such as The Hindu, The Statesman, The Times of India, Hindustan Times, and The Telegraph. He also has a commercial recording, Moods and Melodies (Sagarika Music), to his credit.
