Biography
Kailash Kher, born in 1973 in East Delhi, is a well-known Indian singer, composer, and performer whose music draws heavily from Indian folk, Sufi, devotional, and spiritual traditions. Coming from a Kashmiri family with strong folk roots, he was exposed to traditional music early through his father, a folk singer. His childhood and formative years were marked by a deep internal drive toward music, leading him to leave home as a teenager in search of musical training and spiritual clarity.
Largely self-taught, Kher developed his musical understanding by closely listening to classical masters and regional folk traditions. After working briefly in the handicrafts business and later facing severe personal and financial hardship, he returned to Delhi and eventually moved to Mumbai to pursue music professionally. His early years in Mumbai were spent composing advertising jingles, which helped him gain recognition within the music industry.
Kailash Kher’s breakthrough in films came in the early 2000s, with songs that stood out for their raw emotion and spiritual undertones. Tracks such as Allah Ke Bande brought him wide attention and established his identity as a singer whose voice carried intensity, sincerity, and devotional resonance. Over time, he sang for numerous Hindi and regional films and also composed music and lyrics for selected projects.
In 2004, he formed the band Kailasa, which became central to his non-film musical identity. Through multiple albums, the band introduced a contemporary yet rooted Sufi-folk sound that resonated strongly with audiences in India and abroad. Kailash Kher has performed extensively at major international venues and festivals across North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
Beyond performance, he has actively contributed to television, music education, and cultural initiatives, promoting Indian folk traditions through reality shows and his music academy. His body of work has earned him numerous awards, including the Padma Shri, reflecting his impact on Indian music across popular and traditional spheres.
