Juthika Roy

Juthika Roy (1920–2014) occupies an important place in the history of Indian devotional and light classical music. Born in Amta, Howrah, she displayed musical talent early in life and recorded her first album at the age of twelve. Her early entry into the recording world laid the foundation for a long and productive career that spanned nearly forty years. She became especially known for her expressive voice, clear diction, and the emotional depth she brought to devotional and lyrical compositions.

She sang extensively in Hindi and Bengali, recording more than 200 Hindi songs and over 100 Bengali film and modern songs. Her repertoire also included a large body of Rabindrasangeet, Nazrul Geeti, and non-film devotional music. Many of her songs achieved lasting popularity, with titles such as “Sanjher Taroka Ami,” “Emoni Borosha Chilo Sedin,” “Jani Jani Priyo,” and “Tumi Jodi Radhe Hote Shyam” becoming widely cherished by listeners. Alongside her non-film work, she also recorded devotional songs for the Hindi film industry, further expanding her reach across linguistic and regional boundaries.

A significant influence on her musical journey was Kazi Nazrul Islam, under whose guidance she sang several notable compositions. She also worked closely with renowned Bengali music director Kamal Dasgupta. Her artistry earned admiration from prominent national figures, including Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, reflecting the cultural and spiritual resonance of her music. In recognition of her contribution to Indian music, the Government of India awarded her the Padma Shri in 1972. Juthika Roy’s legacy endures through her recordings, which continue to be valued for their simplicity, devotion, and timeless emotional appeal.
