Jotin Bhattacharya

Jotin Bhattacharya was a respected Indian classical musician and an accomplished sarod player, known for his deep association with the Maihar tradition of Hindustani music. He was born on 1 January 1926 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, into a Bengali family settled in the culturally rich city. From a young age, he was exposed to music and academic learning, which later shaped both his artistic and intellectual career. 

Jotin Bhattacharya pursued his formal education at Banaras Hindu University, where he completed his bachelor’s, master’s, and even MPhil degrees before fully dedicating himself to music. His academic background gave him a scholarly perspective on Indian classical music, which later reflected in his writings and teaching. 

He received rigorous training in sarod under the legendary guru Allauddin Khan, one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century and the founder of the Maihar gharana. Jotin Bhattacharya trained under him for nearly eight years, not only as a disciple but also serving closely as his secretary, managing correspondence and learning directly through constant association. This close relationship helped him deeply absorb the traditional knowledge and discipline of the Maihar style. 

As a performer, Jotin Bhattacharya was known for presenting the authentic Maihar gharana style, characterized by depth, clarity, and emotional richness in raga development. His sarod playing reflected a strong command over technique along with a meditative and expressive approach. He performed at various classical music events and was also associated with institutions such as the Baba Allauddin Khan Music Foundation, contributing to the promotion of classical music. 

Apart from performing, he played an important role as a teacher and mentor. He guided several students and even taught members of his guru’s extended family, including grandchildren of Allauddin Khan. His contribution to teaching helped preserve the traditions of the Maihar gharana for future generations. 

Jotin Bhattacharya was also a noted author and music scholar. He wrote three important books on his guru, including “Ustad Allauddin Khan and His Music” (1979), which is considered a valuable resource for understanding the life and contributions of the maestro. He also wrote works in Bengali and Hindi, showing his dedication to documenting musical knowledge. 

In 1974, he released his first music album titled “Sarod” under HMV, marking his presence in recorded classical music. His work contributed to spreading the sound of the sarod to wider audiences. 

Jotin Bhattacharya passed away on 22 February 2016 in Varanasi, leaving behind a rich legacy as a performer, teacher, and scholar. He remains an important figure in Hindustani classical music, remembered for his dedication to tradition and his close connection to one of the greatest musical lineages in India.
