Jayanta Banerjee

Jayanta Banerjee is an accomplished Indian classical sitar artist whose musical growth reflects both deep-rooted tradition and creative exploration. Born into a musically inclined family, he began his formal sitar training under the late Sri Amit Prosonno Mukherjee and later received advanced guidance from eminent gurus such as Pandit Debiprashad Chatterjee, the late Pandit Santosh Banerjee, and the late Pandit Robi Chakroborty. His training encompassed the rich aesthetics of the Rampur and Maihar gharanas, providing him with a balanced foundation of melody, technique, and classical discipline.

From an early stage, Jayanta Banerjee’s sitar playing displayed a natural lyrical flow and clarity of expression. His achievement at the National Youth Festival in 1997 marked an important milestone, opening new avenues for performance, composition, and creative collaboration. Since then, he has steadily expanded his musical scope, establishing himself not only as a refined solo performer but also as a sensitive accompanist and an imaginative composer.

His career reflects a rare versatility, with compositions that bridge Indian classical music and global forms. Jayanta Banerjee has composed and collaborated for diverse artistic contexts, including world dance productions and fusion projects, drawing inspiration from styles such as jazz and flamenco while maintaining a classical core. Internationally, he has performed across the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Fiji, and several other countries, reaching audiences in more than thirteen nations. He has shared the stage with some of the most respected figures in Indian classical music and dance, including Pandit Chitresh Das and the Chitresh Das Dance Company, Pandit Birju Maharaj, Dr. L. Subramaniam, Pandit Rajan and Sajan Mishra, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, Ustad Sabir Khan, Pandit Bhawani Shankar, and Pandit Ramesh Mishra.
