Jason Kalidas’s path into Hindustani classical music has been one of deep commitment and quiet transformation. Starting as a teenage multi-percussionist, he discovered Indian classical music at nineteen and began spending long stretches in India, dedicating himself to the traditional guru-shishya approach. That choice shaped not only his, but the way he lives his music, immersed in the discipline, philosophy, and lineage of the tradition.

His musical roots began with Tabla under Ishwal Lal Mishra in Varanasi, giving him a rhythmic fluency that still underpins his Bansuri playing today. Over the years, his study of Raag took shape through guidance from Dr. Shanish Kumar on Bansuri and Manoj Dubey in vocal music, a senior disciple of Pandit Channulal Mishra. Perhaps most profoundly, Jason had the privilege of living and learning with Pandit Rajendra Prasanna in Delhi, absorbing not just technical skill but the subtle artistry that comes from sitting at the feet of a master.

Jason’s music is anchored in the spiritual heart of Hindustani classical tradition. He is drawn to the concept of Raasa, the distilled essence of feeling, and its power to move listeners into states of deep reflection and inner change. His performances are known for their balance of lyrical phrasing and rhythmic precision, the result of a lifetime’s intertwining of melody and rhythm. It’s a sound that feels equally at home in a formal concert hall or the stillness of a meditative setting.

Alongside his traditional recitals, Jason often curates sacred music experiences: Raag explorations accompanied by live Tampura, offered as ceremonies or contemplative journeys. His work has reached audiences at the Darbar Festival, Sadler’s Wells, The Place in London, the United Nations Headquarters in New York, MACBA in Barcelona, and across India. Wherever he plays, his Bansuri becomes more than an instrument; it becomes a vessel for connection, presence, and the timeless flow of Indian classical music.
