Biography
Pandit Jai Kishan Maharaj is a senior Kathak dancer and choreographer of the Lucknow Kalka-Bindadin Gharana, belonging to the eighth generation of this tradition. Born on 12 May 1962, he received his primary training in Kathak from his father and guru Pandit Birju Maharaj, under the traditional guru-shishya parampara, including formal ganda bandhan discipleship.
His work spans classical performance, choreography, music composition, and teaching. He is widely noted for choreographing Kathak sequences in the Hindi film Dil To Pagal Hai, bringing classical dance vocabulary to a mainstream cinematic context. His stage productions include dance dramas such as Aakanshka and Panchboot and contemporary Kathak ballets, including Chaitna.
Alongside dance, he is active as a composer and writer. He has created over 300 bandishes, covering forms such as thumri, dadra, ghazal, and bhajan, as well as thematic works like Laghu Ramayan. His artistic practice includes music direction, lyric writing, and vocal presentation within Kathak repertoire.
Pandit Jai Kishan Maharaj has been associated with Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, since 1985 and has served as a Kathak guru there since 2009, also contributing to repertoire choreography and institutional training. His teaching work has reached students in India and internationally.
His recognitions include the Bharat Icon Award, Delhi Ratna Award, and other cultural honors. He is also credited with encouraging exploration of bai ang (left-side orientation) within Kathak presentation and developing thematic dance works based on traditional and contemporary subjects.
