Biography

Hiren Chate is a tabla artist shaped by the classical traditions of the Punjab, Delhi, and Ajarada gharanas. His musical journey is rooted in disciplined training and a deep respect for authentic Indian classical music. Since 2006, he has been under the guidance of Pandit Yogesh Samsi, refining his artistry through close mentorship. He also had the privilege of learning the Ajarada style from the late Sudhir Kumar Saxena and earlier received training from Shri Divyang Vakil and his father, the late Shri Raghunath Chate.

While strengthening his command over these classical styles, Hiren remains equally drawn to exploring new musical spaces. He engages with diverse genres to create fresh sounds and evolving repertoires. His work includes teaching individuals and groups, composing music for dance productions, collaborating with Eastern and Western musicians, and accompanying Kathak as well as contemporary dancers in stage and theater projects.

In 2012, Hiren moved to Mumbai to immerse himself further in training with his guru. Alongside his performance career, he founded “Beat of a Drum,” a platform through which he organizes events, conducts lectures on the relationship between music and mathematics, and teaches students online across the UK, USA, Canada, and Greece. His practice reflects a balance between tradition and innovation, discipline and curiosity, making him a versatile and thoughtful voice in contemporary tabla performance.
