Harshdeep Kaur

Harshdeep Kaur was born on 16 December 1986 in Delhi into a musically inclined Sikh family. Her father, Savinder Singh Sohal, is associated with the manufacture of musical instruments, and music formed a natural part of her upbringing. She began learning music at the age of six, studying Indian classical music under Tejpal Singh of the Singh Brothers and later training in Western classical traditions as well. She also studied piano at the Delhi School of Music, which broadened her musical foundation.

Her public journey began early through television music competitions. She first gained attention by winning MTV’s Video Ga Ga in 2003 and later won Junoon—Kuch Kar Dikhaane Ka in 2008, where she represented the Sufi genre under the mentorship of Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. These victories positioned her as a distinctive young voice with a strong command of Sufi expression.

Harshdeep entered Bollywood playback singing as a teenager, recording her first film song, “Sajna Main Haari,” at the age of sixteen. Over time, she developed a diverse repertoire that spans Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Malayalam, and Urdu film music. Her singing blends classical sensitivity with contemporary accessibility, allowing her to move between devotional, romantic, and folk-inspired compositions.

She is the only singer to have appeared in all four seasons of Coke Studio India, where her performances highlighted her Sufi and folk strengths. She has served as a judge on television singing competitions and performed at major national and international events, including global tours with A. R. Rahman and performances at venues such as Wembley Arena and the Royal Festival Hall in London.

Notably, she has also contributed to international projects, including a track composed by A. R. Rahman for the Hollywood film 127 Hours, making her one of the few Indian playback singers with a presence in a Hollywood soundtrack.

Alongside commercial recordings, she frequently releases devotional music, shabads, and independent singles through her own music label. This parallel body of work reflects her continued engagement with spiritual and traditional music forms.

On the personal front, she married Mankeet Singh in 2015, and the couple welcomed their first child in 2021.

Today, Harshdeep Kaur is regarded as a key contemporary voice in Indian playback singing—particularly in Sufi and folk-inspired music. Her career reflects a balance between mainstream cinema, independent music, and devotional traditions, contributing to her sustained relevance in the Indian music landscape.
