Dr. Harekrishna Haldar (also spelled Halder) is an Indian musician based in Kolkata, recognized as a contemporary exponent of the Shree Khol, a terracotta drum associated with devotional and folk traditions of eastern India. His work centers on advancing the Shree Khol as a solo concert instrument, rather than solely as an accompanying percussion instrument in kirtan and sankirtan traditions.
The Shree Khol, traditionally used in Gaudiya Vaishnava devotional music and related cultural practices, occupies a central place in Dr. Haldar’s artistic work. He is noted for sustained practice, technical clarity, and interpretative demonstrations that explore the tonal and rhythmic range of the instrument.
In addition to his conventional repertoire, he has presented innovative demonstrations, including recreating environmental sounds such as a moving train through rhythmic phrasing on the Shree Khol, which highlights its expressive capacity.
Dr. Haldar has appeared at spiritual and cultural venues in India and abroad. Documented performances include:
