Biography
Hafiz Ali Khan (1888–1972) was one of the most eminent sarod players of Hindustani classical music. He was born in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India, into a distinguished family of musicians. His father, Nanneh Khan, was also a sarod player, and Hafiz Ali Khan received his early musical training from him, growing up in a rich musical environment.
He later trained under several great masters, including his cousin Abdulla Khan, Mohammad Amir Khan, and the famous beenkar Wazir Khan of Rampur, who was believed to be a descendant of the legendary Tansen. He also learned styles like dhrupad and thumri, which influenced his musical expression and added depth to his sarod playing.
Hafiz Ali Khan became one of the most respected instrumentalists of his time, even in an era dominated by vocal music. He served as a court musician in Gwalior and performed at major music festivals across India, especially in Bengal. His performances were admired for their lyrical beauty, clarity of tone, and powerful stage presence.
He received high recognition for his contribution to Indian classical music and was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1960. His music was known for its purity and emotional depth, and he played a key role in preserving the traditional style of sarod playing within the Bangash (Gwalior) lineage.
Hafiz Ali Khan passed away in 1972 at the age of 84 (reported in sources as in India). His legacy continues through his son, the famous sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan, and future generations. He is remembered as one of the greatest sarod players in Indian classical music history.
