Gurdain Rayatt

Gurdain Rayatt is one of the leading tabla performers and educators in the UK and Europe, acclaimed for his dynamic artistry and deep command of rhythm. Born into a distinguished musical family, he began learning tabla at the age of three under his father, Ustad Harkirat Rayatt, and grandfather, Bhai Gurmit Singh Virdee, absorbing the traditions of the Punjab and Benares gharanas.

At sixteen, Gurdain became a disciple of the legendary Pandit Shankar Ghosh of the Farukhabad gharana, later moving to Kolkata to refine his craft. His style seamlessly blends the nuances of the Punjab, Benares, and Farukhabad traditions, resulting in a distinctive rhythmic voice that is both intricate and expressive.

Gurdain has performed with some of Indian classical music’s most celebrated artists, including Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Pandit Birju Maharaj, Rakesh Chaurasia, and Anoushka Shankar. His tabla playing transforms rhythm into storytelling, combining technical mastery with emotive depth.

He has graced stages such as the Royal Albert Hall, Southbank Centre, and major festivals including WOMAD and Darbar. With flawless rhythm, sensitivity, and vibrant presence, Gurdain Rayatt continues to inspire audiences worldwide.
