Biography

Gopal Shankar Misra was born on 13 August 1957 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, and grew up in a culturally musical environment. Encouraged by his family, he began studying vocal music and sitar at a young age, developing a strong grounding in raga and classical technique. Alongside music, he showed interest in sports during his childhood.

His commitment to music deepened around the age of fifteen, when he began focusing more seriously on training and performance. In 1975, his father introduced him to the professional music world in Varanasi. During this period, he performed on the sitar and presented ragas such as Marwa, Chandrakauns, and Pahadi. He was supported by musicians connected to the Banaras tradition, including artists from the lineage of Anokhelal Mishra.

Over time, Misra became especially associated with the vichitra veena, a demanding and less commonly heard instrument in Hindustani classical music that uses a slide to produce continuous glides and microtonal nuances. His work helped sustain awareness of this instrument at a time when few musicians performed on it.

In 1998, he was invited to join a UK tour and recording project involving the group State of Bengal and composer Ananda Shankar, reflecting his openness to cross-cultural musical settings. Alongside performing, he was also active as a music teacher, sharing his knowledge with students.

Gopal Shankar Misra passed away in 1999. He is remembered among listeners of Hindustani music as one of the late 20th-century artists associated with the vichitra veena and with efforts to keep its sound present in contemporary performance.
