Biography

Pandit Gopal Krishan Sharma (1926–2004) was a leading vichitra veena artist whose work significantly enriched the Hindustani classical music tradition. Born into a musical family, he received his earliest training from his father, Pandit Nand Kishore, a noted surbahar player, vocalist, and disciple of Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar. After his father’s passing, he continued his musical education under Pandit Khubchand Bramchari of the Gwalior school, strengthening his grounding in classical discipline and raga purity.

In 1949, he joined All India Radio, where he evolved into a highly respected staff artist. Alongside the vichitra veena, Pandit Gopal Krishan Sharma was proficient in several instruments, including the tabla, guitar, and the folk instrument ektara. He was also an accomplished vocalist, which strongly informed his instrumental phrasing and melodic sensitivity.

His music was marked by a deep command over dhrupad-based presentation, with expansive aalap, structured jod, and powerful jhala sections. His jhala playing, in particular, stood out for its complex rhythmic patterns and varied mizrab strokes, often building toward a trance-like crescendo. He composed original pieces in dhamar and other rhythmic cycles and created several new ragas, notably Shiv Onkar, Tilak Malhar, and Saraswati Sarang. For Akashwani, he composed orchestral works, including Taar Nritya.

As a guru, Pandit Gopal Krishan Sharma was known for his strict and disciplined teaching method, emphasizing raga purity and refined rhythmic expression. His disciples include several respected instrumentalists and vocalists across vichitra veena, sitar, guitar, vocal music, sarod, violin, and jaltarang, many of whom have carried forward his musical legacy in India and abroad.

In recognition of his contribution, he was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1994 and the Lichhavi Sangeet Sammaan in 2000. Pandit Gopal Krishan Sharma remains an important figure in the history of the vichitra veena and Hindustani classical music.
