Giuliano Modarelli

Giuliano Modarelli (born 1977 in Milan, Italy) is a guitarist, composer, and producer working at the intersection of Indian classical music, jazz, and global fusion. He moved to England in 2000 and studied at Leeds College of Music, where he completed a degree in jazz performance and composition. Since then, he has worked as a full-time musician in the UK and internationally.

Alongside his jazz background, Modarelli pursued training in Hindustani classical music. He studied with sitar player Dharambir Singh and sarod maestros Buddhadev Dasgupta and Prattyush Banerjee. This training influenced his melodic approach and cross-genre collaborations.

He is the founder of the fusion collective Samay and co-founder of the ensemble Kefaya, known for combining elements of Indian music, jazz, and global traditions. With these projects, he has performed at major international festivals such as WOMAD, the London Jazz Festival, the Darbar Festival, and other global music platforms, as well as on BBC radio networks and Doordarshan UK.

In 2008, he collaborated with tabla player Bickram Ghosh on music for films including Little Zizou and The Diamond Murders and toured India as part of cross-cultural projects. His discography includes solo and collaborative albums spanning jazz, fusion, and world music contexts.

Modarelli has worked with a wide range of international artists across genres and has also composed for dance productions and interdisciplinary projects. His work is noted for integrating Indian classical elements with contemporary global music forms while maintaining respect for traditional sources.

He remains active as a performer, composer, and collaborator in international music circuits.
