Geeta Dutt

Geeta Dutt (23 November 1930 – 20 July 1972) was one of the most famous playback singers in Indian cinema. She was known for her soulful and expressive voice and sang many memorable songs in Hindi and Bengali films during the 1950s and 1960s. Her emotional style of singing made her one of the most respected singers of her time.

Geeta Dutt was born as Geeta Ghosh Roy Chowdhuri in Faridpur, which is now in Bangladesh. Her family later moved to Mumbai (then Bombay), where she developed a deep interest in music. She received training in classical music and soon began singing on radio and in films, which helped her gain recognition in the music industry.

She started her playback singing career in the mid-1940s and became popular after singing in films produced by famous filmmakers. Many of her songs were composed by well-known music directors, and her voice suited romantic, sad, and devotional songs. Some of her famous songs include “Babuji Dheere Chalna,” “Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam,” and “Na Jao Saiyan Chhuda Ke Baiyan.”

Geeta Dutt worked with many leading composers and singers of her era and became one of the important voices of Hindi film music. Her unique singing style combined classical influence with deep emotion, which made her songs very popular among listeners.

She passed away on 20 July 1972 in Mumbai at the age of 41. Even after her early death, Geeta Dutt’s songs remain timeless, and she is remembered as one of the greatest playback singers in the history of Indian cinema.
