Firoza Begum

Firoza Begum (1930–2014) was a legendary Bangladeshi singer best known for her authoritative and emotionally resonant interpretations of Nazrul Geeti. She was born on 28 July 1930 in Gopalganj district into the zamindar family of Ratail Ghonaparha. Her father, Khan Bahadur Mohammad Ismail, and her mother, Begum Kowkabunnesa, encouraged a cultured upbringing, and Firoza Begum developed a deep interest in music during childhood.

Her musical journey began at a remarkably young age. While studying in sixth grade, she sang on All India Radio, where her talent gained early recognition. At the age of ten, she met the national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam and became his student, a relationship that profoundly shaped her artistic identity. In 1942, she recorded her first Islamic song with His Master’s Voice on a 78-rpm disc, marking the beginning of a prolific recording career. Over the decades, she released numerous LPs, EPs, CDs, and audio cassettes, building one of the most significant recorded legacies in Nazrul Sangeet.

Firoza Begum lived in Kolkata from 1954 until 1967, a period during which she remained actively engaged with Bengali music circles and broadcasting platforms. She later moved to Dhaka, where she continued her work as a performer and cultural figure. Her singing was distinguished by clarity of diction, emotional restraint, and faithful adherence to the spirit of Nazrul’s compositions, qualities that made her performances enduring reference points.

In 1956, she married singer, composer, and lyricist Kamal Dasgupta, later known as Kamal Uddin Ahmed. Music remained central to her family life, with her sons also pursuing musical careers. Following her passing on 9 September 2014 due to heart and kidney complications, tributes poured in from across Bangladesh and beyond.

Firoza Begum received numerous prestigious honors, including the Independence Day Award and several lifetime achievement recognitions. Her legacy continues through the Feroza Begum Memorial Gold Medal instituted by Dhaka University, ensuring her lasting place in the cultural history of Nazrul Geeti and Bangladeshi music.
