Biography
Kalaimamani Embar S. Kannan has built a versatile career across concert stages, studio recordings, and global tours. Starting violin lessons at the age of six, he quickly emerged as a promising talent and received a Government of India scholarship for his musical training. His performances reflect a strong grounding in the Carnatic tradition, combined with techniques shaped by his studies in Western classical music. Kannan introduced the silent violin into Carnatic performance in 2001, expanding the sound palette of the genre. He has been a regular collaborator with leading vocalists and instrumentalists, contributing to major festivals and recordings. In the film industry, he became part of Ilaiyaraaja’s orchestra and has contributed to numerous Tamil film scores, while also performing for composers including A. R. Rahman, Vidyasagar, and Deva. His career showcases a balance of artistic tradition and modern adaptation, making him a notable figure in contemporary Indian violin performance.
