Biography

E. Gayathri is a leading veena exponent of the Carnatic classical music tradition, widely respected for her scholarly approach and long-standing contribution to Indian art music. Raised in a deeply musical household, she was nurtured in an environment shaped by rigorous practice and artistic discipline. Her early grounding in music came from her parents, after which she underwent advanced training under the renowned Sangita Kalanidhi, T. M. Thyagarajan. 

Her public performance journey began at a young age, when she was invited to perform at the Saint Thyagaraja Festival organized by Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha in Triplicane in 1968. From that point onward, she steadily built a distinguished concert career, appearing regularly on major stages across India and earning recognition from prominent cultural institutions. Over the years, she has also represented Indian classical music internationally, performing in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Singapore, and Malaysia.

Beyond the concert platform, E. Gayathri has made significant contributions to music education and cultural administration. In 2011, she was entrusted with the role of Honorary Director of Tamil Nadu Government Music Colleges in Chennai, Thiruvaiyaru, Madurai, and Coimbatore. Her leadership in the academic sphere continued with her appointment as the first vice-chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Music and Fine Arts University in 2013. Her artistic and institutional contributions have been recognized through numerous honors, including the Kalaimamani Award, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and a doctorate conferred by the World Tamil University, underscoring her enduring influence on Carnatic music and pedagogy.
