Biography

Dilshad Khan (born 7 August 1941, Kolkata, India) is a well-known Indian Hindustani classical vocalist. His birth name is Arabinda Dasgupta. He is known for singing khayal and thumri, two important forms of Indian classical music. 

He started learning music at a very young age. Initially, he learned tabla at the age of four, but later focused on vocal music. He trained under notable teachers such as N. C. Chakravorty, Hidan Banerjee, and Gyan Prakash Ghosh. His musical style was also influenced by the legendary Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. 

Later, after moving to Mumbai, he became a disciple of the Kirana gharana maestros Faiyaz Ahmed Khan and Niaz Ahmed Khan. This training helped him develop a strong classical foundation and refined his singing style. 

Dilshad Khan comes from a musical family. He is the younger brother of famous sarod player Buddhadev Das Gupta and studied at St. Xavier’s Collegiate School in Kolkata, where music composer R. D. Burman was his classmate. 

In his personal life, he is married to renowned classical singer Parveen Sultana. He has contributed significantly to Hindustani classical music and continues to be respected as a senior vocalist.
