Biography
Dilshad Khan belongs to one of the most respected hereditary traditions of Indian classical music, the Sikar gharana of Rajasthan, known for its long association with sarangi playing and vocal artistry. This lineage, now in its tenth generation, was originally nurtured under royal patronage, and Dilshad Khan stands as a contemporary bearer of this rare and continuous musical heritage. His early initiation into music began at the age of six, when he undertook systematic training in sarangi and vocal music within his family.
His foundational instruction came from his grandfather, Ustad Gulab Khan, followed by advanced guidance from his father, Ustad Nasir Khan. A defining influence in his musical development was his uncle, the celebrated sarangi maestro Ustad Sultan Khan, whose artistry played a major role in reshaping the sarangi’s position in Hindustani classical music. Alongside Ram Narayan, Sultan Khan helped establish the sarangi as a prominent solo instrument, moving it beyond its traditional role as an accompaniment voice.
Dilshad Khan’s music reflects this historical transition, combining the depth of traditional gayaki ang with a contemporary performance sensibility. He continues to uphold the stylistic values of his gharana while engaging with a wide spectrum of musical contexts. As a classical performer, he has appeared alongside leading musicians, including frequent collaborations with tabla maestro Zakir Hussain and other senior artists of the Hindustani tradition.
In addition to his classical work, Dilshad Khan has actively contributed to film music and cross-cultural projects, expanding the expressive and sonic possibilities of the sarangi. These collaborations allow the instrument to reach new audiences while maintaining its classical integrity. Recognized internationally, including as a laureate of the 2022 AKMA cycle, Dilshad Khan continues to bridge tradition and innovation, ensuring the sarangi’s evolving presence in both Indian and global musical landscapes.
