Dilip Kumar Roy

Dilip Kumar Roy was a famous Indian singer, musicologist, writer, and spiritual seeker. He was born on 22 January 1897 in Krishnanagar, Bengal (now in India). He was the son of the well-known poet and playwright Dwijendralal Roy, which exposed him to literature and music from a very young age. Dilip Kumar Roy became widely respected for his deep knowledge of Indian classical music and devotional songs.

He studied in University of Cambridge in England, where he completed his education in mathematics. During his time in Europe, he also learned Western music and interacted with many famous musicians and scholars. After returning to India, he decided to dedicate his life to music, culture, and spirituality.

Dilip Kumar Roy received training in Hindustani classical music from several renowned masters. He became known for singing bhajans, devotional songs, and classical compositions with deep emotion and spiritual feeling. He was also closely associated with the spiritual philosopher Sri Aurobindo, and he later lived for many years at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram.

Apart from being a singer, Dilip Kumar Roy was also a prolific writer. He wrote many books on music, philosophy, and spirituality in English and Bengali. His works include essays, memoirs, and discussions about Indian culture and spiritual life. Through his writings and music, he helped introduce Indian spiritual traditions to a wider audience.

Dilip Kumar Roy spent the later years of his life teaching music and spiritual philosophy. In 1959, he founded the Hari Krishna Mandir in Pune, where he continued guiding students and followers. He passed away on 6 January 1980, leaving behind a rich legacy as a musician, thinker, and spiritual teacher.
