Deobrat Mishra

Deobrat Mishra is an eminent Indian classical musician specializing in sitar and surbahar, firmly anchored in the Benares Gharana of Hindustani music. Born into a celebrated musical family, he is the son of Pandit Shivnath Mishra, one of the foremost exponents of the tradition. Mishra represents the 11th generation of this lineage, carrying forward its distinctive aesthetic marked by melodic clarity, rhythmic sophistication, and emotional depth.

His musical training began at a young age. He initially learned tabla from his mother, Smt. Pramila Mishra, who belongs to a respected family of Banaras tabla players. At the age of five, he commenced formal vocal training under his father, followed by sitar instruction a year later. Remarkably, he gave his first public sitar performance within six months of beginning his instrumental studies, signalling early artistic maturity.

Deobrat Mishra is particularly known for his innovative interpretation of Benarasi thumri on the sitar, an approach that blends instrumental expression with the stylistic nuances of vocal forms such as dhrupad and khayal. This rare synthesis has become a defining aspect of his musicianship, setting him apart within contemporary classical performance.

Since the mid-1990s, he has toured extensively in Europe and other parts of the world, often performing alongside his father. His international engagements include collaborations with Indian and European musicians, orchestras, and world-music ensembles. Notably, he performed and recorded with the Orchestra del Piemonte in Italy and has represented Indian classical music at major global festivals and cross-cultural projects.

In addition to performance, Mishra is deeply involved in music education. He co-founded the Academy of Indian Classical Music in 2006 with Pandit Shivnath Mishra, where he continues to teach and mentor students. He holds a master’s degree in sitar from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Prayagraj.

Over the years, he has performed at leading festivals, cultural institutions, universities, and concert halls across India and abroad. His discography includes solo recordings as well as collaborative world-music projects released internationally. Honored with numerous national and international awards, Deobrat Mishra is widely regarded as a significant cultural ambassador of Indian classical music, contributing both to the preservation of tradition and its contemporary global expression.
