Deepika Sreenivasan

Deepika Sreenivasan occupies a distinctive place in contemporary Carnatic percussion as one of India’s prominent women mridangam artistes. Her training began under Vidwan Nandyala Ramamurthy and continues under Vidwan Patri Satish Kumar, shaping a style that combines rhythmic authority with subtlety and musical sensitivity. She holds a Vidwath degree in Mridangam with distinction, reflecting her rigorous classical grounding.

Recognised as a graded artist by All India Radio, Deepika has performed at several of the most respected platforms for Indian classical music, including the Madras Music Academy and the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai. Her recent appearance at the G20 Summit further underlines her presence on globally significant stages.

Beyond the traditional role of accompaniment, she is an active creative force within the Carnatic ecosystem. She is the co-founder of the Maitri ensemble and frequently collaborates with her sister, vocalist Krithika Sreenivasan. In addition to mridangam, she is accomplished in Konnakkol and engages in composition, expanding the expressive possibilities of rhythm in performance.

Deepika’s contributions have been formally recognised through the Junior Fellowship and the Scholarship for Young Artistes awarded by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. She has also received honorific titles such as “Mridanga Maantrike” and “Udayonmukha Prathibhe.” Alongside her artistic career, she is trained as an engineer and is an alumna of IIM Kozhikode.
