About

Debasmita Bhattacharya is a sarod player of the Senia Shahjahanpur Gharana, trained by her father and Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta. She performs globally, teaches, and promotes Indian classical music.

Biography

Debasmita Bhattacharya stands among the most accomplished contemporary sarod artistes of Indian classical music. Born into a culturally enriched Bengali family of musicians, her journey with the sarod began at an early age under the guidance of her father, the renowned sarod maestro Pandit Debasish Bhattacharya. This early immersion laid a strong technical and aesthetic foundation, shaping her disciplined approach to raga and tone.

She later became a disciple of the legendary Padma Bhushan Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta of the Senia Shahjahanpur Gharana, under whose tutelage her artistry matured with depth, clarity, and emotional resonance. Through years of rigorous training, Debasmita mastered the intricate nuances of the sarod, developing a style that balances traditional purity with a sensitive, contemporary outlook.

Alongside her distinguished solo career, Debasmita has been actively involved in international music projects, orchestras, and collaborative productions. Her ability to engage with diverse musical languages while remaining rooted in classical discipline has made her a sought-after performer on global platforms. She has collaborated with composers and musicians across genres, contributing meaningfully to cross-cultural musical dialogue.

Debasmita has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including World Expo 2020 in Dubai, Queen Elizabeth Hall in London with the Aurora Orchestra and handpan artist Manu Delago, and major stages across the Middle East, China, the United States, and Europe. Her international appearances include performances in Sweden, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Scotland, England, and several Far Eastern countries. She has also collaborated with musicians playing the African kora, Chinese guzheng, Serbian accordion, and other world instruments, expanding the expressive possibilities of the sarod.

As part of the World Strings Ensemble at Expo 2020, her original composition was performed by select international musicians, including a special presentation at the Museum of the Future in Dubai. Beyond performance, Debasmita is a committed educator, sharing her knowledge with the next generation and working actively to preserve and promote the sarod tradition.

With her artistry grounded in tradition and open to innovation, Debasmita Bhattacharya continues to leave a lasting imprint on the global landscape of Indian classical music.
