About

Dayanita Singh is an Indian photographer and artist known for mobile museums and book-objects, redefining how photographs are archived, sequenced, and exhibited globally.

Biography

Dayanita Singh is an Indian photographer and visual artist whose work redefines the relationship between images, archives, and exhibition formats. Known for her innovative “mobile museums,” she presents photographs as evolving bodies of work that can be edited, rearranged, and displayed in multiple ways, moving beyond static gallery presentations into dynamic, modular structures.

Her practice places strong emphasis on publishing as an artistic medium. Through her concept of “book-objects,” Singh transforms books into hybrid forms that function simultaneously as artworks, exhibitions, and archives. Works such as Museum Bhavan demonstrate her approach to sequencing and re-sequencing images, allowing narrative and meaning to shift depending on arrangement and context.

Over the years, Singh’s work has been exhibited at major international institutions, including the Hayward Gallery (London), Museum für Moderne Kunst (Frankfurt), Art Institute of Chicago, and Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (New Delhi). Her practice continues to influence contemporary photography by challenging conventional formats of display, authorship, and visual storytelling.
