Dattatreya Vishnu Paluskar

Pandit Dattatreya Vishnu Paluskar (1921–1955), widely known as D. V. Paluskar, holds a revered place in the history of Hindustani classical music for his remarkable artistry and disciplined musical vision. Born in Nasik, he was the son of Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar, a towering figure in Indian music education and the founder of Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. After the untimely death of his father when Paluskar was just ten years old, his musical training was carefully continued under eminent gurus, including Pandit Vinayakrao Patwardhan, Pandit Narayanrao Vyas, Pandit Chintamanrao Paluskar, and Pandit Mirashi Buwa. This rigorous tutelage laid a strong foundation rooted in the Gwalior gharana tradition.

Paluskar made his concert debut at the Harvallabh Sangeet Sammelan at the age of fourteen, where his exceptional command over raga and laya immediately drew attention. While deeply grounded in the Gwalior style, he remained open to absorbing aesthetic elements from other gharanas, enriching his musical expression without compromising classical discipline. His singing was marked by purity of swara, balanced elaboration, and an innate sense of bhava, making his performances accessible yet uncompromisingly classical.

Although primarily a classical concert artist, Paluskar also contributed briefly to film music. His duet with Ustad Amir Khan in the film Baiju Bawra remains historically significant, bringing classical vocal music to a wider audience without dilution. His recorded legacy, especially his 78 rpm discs, continues to serve as an important reference for students and connoisseurs of Hindustani music.

Pandit D. V. Paluskar’s life was cut short by encephalitis at the age of thirty-four, yet his contribution far exceeded his years. Through his recordings and the enduring influence of his style, he remains a symbol of classical integrity, youthful brilliance, and the highest ideals of the Hindustani vocal tradition.
