Biography

Brij Narayan is a distinguished Hindustani classical musician whose sarod playing reflects a rare synthesis of melodic sensitivity and rhythmic strength. Born on 25 April 1952 in Udaipur, Rajasthan, he was raised in a deeply musical environment as the son of Pandit Ram Narayan, the pioneer who elevated the sarangi to international concert status. Immersed in music from childhood, Brij Narayan began learning at an early age and started playing the sarod at seven, while also developing an understanding of the sarangi, vocal music, and rhythmic accompaniment.

His early training was shaped primarily by his father, though he also received guidance from eminent musicians such as sarod maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and tabla legend Pandit Chatur Lal. This diverse exposure enriched his musical outlook and strengthened his command over raga structure and layakari. In 1967, he achieved national recognition by winning the President’s Gold Medal as the top instrumentalist in the All India Radio competition, marking a decisive moment in his career.

After graduating from the University of Mumbai in 1972, Brij Narayan pursued music full-time and soon began performing on major international platforms, including the Munich Olympics. Over the following decades, he toured extensively across Europe, Africa, and the Americas, presenting Indian classical music to global audiences. Alongside concert performances, he contributed to film music and collaborated with leading artists, including recordings with tabla maestro Zakir Hussain.

Brij Narayan has also remained committed to the promotion of Indian classical music among younger audiences, performing for organisations such as SPIC MACAY and supporting educational initiatives through the Pandit Ram Narayan Foundation in Mumbai. Awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2015, he continues to be celebrated for his artistic integrity, deep-rooted tradition, and enduring contribution to the sarod repertoire.
