Biswajit Deb

Pandit Biswajit Deb was born into a zamindar family of musicians, where music was not only a tradition but a way of life. His ancestors originally lived in Uttar Pradesh and migrated nearly 250 years ago to West Midnapore in West Bengal. In this cultural setting, his grandfather and uncle became professional players of the srikhol, the terracotta two-sided drum used in devotional music.

From the age of five, Biswajit began his training in tabla under his father, Shri Bhutnath Deb, a renowned pakhawaj player who had accompanied legends such as Shri Gopeshwar Bandopadhyay. This early grounding shaped his discipline and musical values. His advanced training was conducted under eminent gurus—Pandit Shridhar Dutta, a disciple of Ustad Masit Khan; Pandit Dr. Prabir Bhattacharya, a senior disciple of Ustad Keramatullah Khan; and Pandit Damodar Bhattacharya. Alongside tabla, he also learned srikhol from his uncle, a disciple of the celebrated Pandit Nari Kamar.

Parallel to his musical journey, Pandit Biswajit Deb pursued formal education and graduated with distinction with a Bachelor of Science from Calcutta University. He later achieved first rank in Sangeet Praveen from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad. During this period, he began performing professionally at reputed baithaks and music circles in north Kolkata. Although he received an opportunity to join the Department of Forest, Government of West Bengal, his father guided him to dedicate himself fully to music.

While frequently visiting Rabindra Bharati University to learn from his guru, Pandit Dr. Prabir Bhattacharya, his talent drew the attention of Pandit Chinmay Lahiri, who invited him to accompany him in concerts. From that moment, Biswajit Deb began receiving regular invitations to accompany legendary Bharat Ratna and Padma awardee artists, marking the beginning of a respected professional career.

Through heritage, education, and unwavering dedication, Pandit Biswajit Deb carries forward a lineage where rhythm, tradition, and discipline continue to shape every beat.
