Bharat Vyas (6 January 1918 – 4 July 1982) was a famous Indian lyricist who made a significant contribution to Hindi cinema, especially during the 1950s and 1960s. He is remembered for writing meaningful, devotional, and poetic songs that remain popular even today. His work reflected Indian culture, spirituality, and emotional depth, making him one of the most respected lyricists of his time.
Bharat Vyas was born in Bikaner during British India. He belonged to a culturally rich background and developed an early interest in literature, poetry, and music. His father’s influence and his surroundings helped shape his creative thinking. He later pursued his education in commerce (B.Com) in Kolkata, which exposed him to a broader cultural environment and further enriched his artistic sensibilities.
After completing his studies, he moved to Mumbai (then Bombay) to try his luck in the film industry. His career as a lyricist began with the film Duhaai (1943), where he wrote several songs. Gradually, his talent was recognized, and he started getting more opportunities in Hindi cinema. He worked with well-known music directors and contributed lyrics to many successful films.
Bharat Vyas is best known for writing timeless and soulful songs such as “Ae Malik Tere Bande Hum” and “Ye Kaun Chitrakar Hai.” These songs are admired for their philosophical meaning and simplicity. His lyrics often carried spiritual messages, moral values, and a deep connection to Indian traditions. Many of his songs are still sung in schools, cultural programs, and devotional gatherings.
He wrote songs for many popular films like Do Aankhen Barah Haath, Navrang, Goonj Uthi Shehnai, Parineeta, and Boond Jo Ban Gayee Moti. In his personal life, his younger brother, B. M. Vyas, was a well-known actor in Hindi cinema. Bharat Vyas maintained a simple and dedicated lifestyle, focusing mainly on his work and creativity.
