Bharat Sundar, a Carnatic vocalist and composer based in Chennai, blends tradition with innovation. AIR Grade A artist & Carnatic Music Idol winner.

Biography

Bharat Sundar is an Indian Carnatic vocalist, composer, and performer based in Chennai, recognized for his thoughtful approach to the Carnatic tradition and his deep engagement with layam (rhythmic intricacy). Considered one of the prominent musicians of his generation, he is known for presenting classical repertoire with a balance of traditional rigor and creative interpretation. His performances often highlight complex raga development and rhythmic sophistication.

He began his musical training at the age of six under Smt. Gayathri Mahesh later continued his studies with Vidushi Leelavathi Gopalakrishnan and Vidwan G. Srikanth. Bharat Sundar is currently under the mentorship of senior Carnatic musicians Sri P. S. Narayanaswamy and Sangita Kalanidhi Dr. S. Sowmya, through whom he continues to refine his understanding of Carnatic performance traditions. He first gained widespread recognition after winning Jaya TV’s inaugural Carnatic Music Idol competition, which brought him to a wider audience.

An All India Radio Grade A artist, Bharat Sundar, also holds a gold medal in M.A. Music from the University of Madras. Over the years, he has received several awards and recognitions, including the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar (2020) from the Sangeet Natak Akademi, the Kala Ratna Award (2020), the Kalki Krishnamurthy Award (2019), and the Best Concert Award (Senior Category) from the Music Academy, Chennai (2019). He performs regularly at major Carnatic music festivals and concert platforms in India and abroad, including appearances at the Madras Music Academy and international events such as Yaksha 2026.
