Biography

Pandit Bhajan Sopori (1948–2022) was an Indian classical santoor artist associated with the Sufiana musical tradition of Kashmir. Born in Srinagar, he belonged to a lineage of santoor players and received training from his grandfather, S.C. Sopori, and father Shambhoo Nath Sopori.

He developed a distinct playing style known as the “Sopori Baaj,” which incorporated elements of dhrupad aesthetics, expanded tonal range, and structural innovations to the instrument. His approach to performance emphasized raga alap, tonal sustain, and rhythmic development, often presented with both tabla and pakhawaj accompaniment.

In addition to performing in India and internationally, he was active as a composer, educator, and musicologist. He founded the Sopori Academy of Music and Performing Arts (SaMaPa), which works towards the promotion of Indian classical music and related initiatives.

He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1992) and the Padma Shri (2004) for his contributions to music.
