Basavraj Rajaguru

Basavaraj Rajguru (also known as Pandit Basavraj Rajguru) was one of the most respected Indian classical vocalists of the 20th century, associated with the Kirana gharana. He was born on 24 August 1920 in Yaliwal village in the Dharwad district of Karnataka. He came from a family deeply rooted in scholarship, astrology, and music. His father, a trained Carnatic musician from Tanjavur, introduced him to music at an early age, which laid the foundation for his lifelong dedication to classical singing.

From childhood, Rajguru showed a strong interest in music. He was attracted to theatrical performances and began singing in drama troupes, gaining early recognition with Vamanrao Master’s traveling company. His life changed significantly after the death of his father when he was just 13 years old. Around this time, he came under the guidance of Panchakshari Gawai, a renowned blind musician who became his main guru and shaped his musical career. Under Gawai’s training, Rajguru developed his skills and gave his first major performance in 1936 at the Vijayanagara Empire celebrations in Hampi.

After the death of Panchakshari Gawai in 1944, Rajguru continued learning from other great musicians. He received training from Sawai Gandharva, and later from Sureshbabu Mane due to Gandharva’s ill health. His desire to learn more also took him to present-day Pakistan, where he studied under Ustad Waheed Khan and Latif Khan, which helped him develop a richer and more diverse musical style within the Kirana tradition.

Rajguru’s musical range was wide and versatile. He was best known for khayal singing, but he also performed thumri, vachanas, natyageet, and ghazals. He sang in several languages, which helped him connect with a broad audience. Despite his great talent and achievements, he lived a simple and humble life, staying away from publicity and fame.

During his career, he earned great respect as both a performer and a teacher. His contributions to Indian classical music were recognized with prestigious awards such as the Padma Shri in 1975 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991. He also received honors from the Sangeet Natak Akademi and an honorary doctorate from Karnataka University, Dharwad.

Pandit Basavaraj Rajguru passed away in July 1991, leaving behind a rich musical legacy. He is remembered as one of the finest exponents of the Kirana gharana and a dedicated guru who influenced many students. In his memory, the Pt. Basavaraj Rajguru Memorial National Award was established to honor excellence in Indian classical music, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
