Biography

Pandit Balaram Pathak (5 November 192615 February 1991) was a Hindustani classical sitar and surbahar artist associated with a traditional North Indian musical lineage. Born in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, he received early training from his father and undertook intensive practice in sitar, surbahar, and vocal music from childhood.

He gave his first public performance at the age of twelve and later served as a court musician in Cossimbazar, Murshidabad. His style reflected elements of both dhrupad and khayal, with emphasis on alap, meend, gamak, and structured raga development.

He contributed to the presentation of rare and newly introduced ragas, including those influenced by Carnatic music. He performed at major music festivals, was regularly featured on All India Radio, and also toured internationally as part of cultural delegations.

He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1989 for his contributions to Indian classical music.
