Biography

Badar Miandad Khan (1962–2007) emerged as a prominent figure in Pakistan’s qawwali landscape, representing both the continuity and evolution of a deep-rooted performing tradition. Growing up in Pakpattan—a centre of Punjabi Sufi heritage—he absorbed qawwali through rigorous training within his family, where poetic expression and ensemble craft were central to performance. His repertoire often featured kalaam by revered poets such as Mian Muhammad Bakhsh and Bulleh Shah, reflecting a strong grounding in Sufi philosophy and Punjabi literary culture.

From 1975 onwards, he developed a steady career through recordings, live qawwali concerts, and collaborations with musicians across Pakistan. His distinctive approach set him apart: while steeped in the classical structures of qawwali, he was open to new arrangements, rhythmic patterns, and production styles. Working with composer-producer Suresh “Baba” Varma, he helped shape Good Karma 1, a fusion album that introduced qawwali to younger and international listeners.

Badar Miandad also made a mark in film music. His compositions for both Pakistani cinema and Bollywood contributed to the wider dissemination of qawwali-influenced soundtracks. The recognition of Jannat Ki Talash at the Nigar Awards further strengthened his credentials in the film industry. His music resurfaced globally when “Raataan Kaaliyaan / Black Nights” appeared on the popular American series Breaking Bad, underscoring the enduring reach of his work.

Until his passing in 2007, he remained respected as a vocalist who balanced tradition with modernity, helping shape the contemporary identity of qawwali in South Asia.
