Badar Ali Khan

Badar Miandad Khan (17 February 1962 – 2 March 2007), popularly known as Badar Ali Khan, was an influential Pakistani qawwali singer with a career spanning three decades. He belonged to a respected lineage of qawwals; his father, Ustad Rasheed Miandad, and grandfather, Ustad Din Muhammad Qawwal, were well-known figures in Punjabi qawwali traditions. He was also closely related to the legendary Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, being both his cousin and brother-in-law.

Badar Miandad began performing qawwali in the mid-1970s and gradually established himself as a leading artist by the 1980s. Alongside classical qawwali performances, he composed music for several Pakistani and Indian films, including Bollywood productions. His contribution to film music further expanded his artistic presence beyond traditional stages.

Known for balancing tradition with experimentation, he also explored qawwali fusion projects, blending classical lyrics with contemporary musical arrangements. His work reached global audiences, with one of his qawwalis featured in an international television series, reflecting the wide appeal of his music.

Badar Miandad Khan passed away in 2007 in Lahore after prolonged health issues. Despite his early demise, his recordings and compositions continue to be valued by qawwali listeners and remain an important part of South Asian devotional music heritage.
