Biography
Badal Roy (16 October 1939 – 18 January 2022), born Amarendra Roy Chowdhury, was a tabla player and percussionist associated with jazz, world music, and experimental music.
He moved to the United States in 1968 and became active in the New York music scene. He collaborated with musicians including Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Hancock, and Ornette Coleman, and contributed to recordings such as On the Corner, Big Fun, and Get Up with It.
He also worked with artists across different musical traditions and performed at festivals and workshops. His playing style incorporated multiple percussion instruments, including tabla.
Badal Roy died on 18 January 2022 in Wilmington, Delaware.
