Biography

Ayaan Ali Bangash was born on 5 September 1979 into the Gwalior–Senia Bangash musical tradition. He received his training in the sarod from his father, Amjad Ali Khan, and belongs to a lineage that traces seven generations of musicians associated with the instrument. From his early years, he performed with his father and elder brother, Amaan, at concerts in India and overseas, including appearances in the late 1980s and a performance at Carnegie Hall in 1997.

His discography includes solo albums such as Raga Bageshwari (1999), Footsteps (2000), Raga Shree (2002), Sonata (2005), and Chords of Devotion (2005). A significant portion of his recorded work features collaborations with Amaan Ali Bangash and Amjad Ali Khan, including Sarod Ghar and Moksha, which received a Grammy nomination in the Best Traditional World Music Album category, and projects such as Strings Attached, Reincarnation, Mystic Dunes, Truth, and Remembering Mahatma Gandhi.

Ayaan has participated in world-music and cross-genre projects and toured internationally in a variety of concert settings. He co-hosted the music talent show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and co-authored Abba: God’s Greatest Gift to Us with his brother. His work includes performances for national events, cultural festivals, and international tours, as well as thematic albums such as Rang (2012) and Headwaters (2013). He continues to collaborate with his family and various artists across classical and fusion contexts.
