Ashok Pathak

Ashok Pathak is a distinguished sitar and surbahar maestro and torchbearer of the Pathak Gharana. Born in Kolkata, he is the son and disciple of Balaram Pathak, a noted sitar and surbahar exponent and Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee. The Pathak lineage traces its heritage to the dhrupad tradition associated with Gopal Nayak.

He began training at the age of five under the guru–shishya parampara and gave his first major concert at fifteen. His style is marked by extended alap, refined meend, powerful gamak and jhala, and the rare ability to execute 8-parda meends on sitar and full octave meend on surbahar. He also presents traditional compositions alongside his own ragas, such as Gyankali and Kushum Kedara.

A Master’s degree holder from Allahabad Music University, he has served as a visiting professor under the Indian Council for Cultural Relations in Suriname and later led Indian classical departments in the Netherlands and Germany. He currently heads the Indian Classical Music department at the Music Academy of The Hague.

Pandit Pathak has performed widely across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, including appearances at major world music festivals and prestigious theaters. His surbahar recitals in the dhrupad style, often accompanied by pakhawaj, are particularly noted. Recipient of honours such as the Surmani award presented by Bismillah Khan and a Lifetime Achievement Award in Belgium, he remains an influential performer, composer, and educator in the global classical music community.
