Ashit Desai

Ashit Desai, born in 1951 in Vadodara, Gujarat, emerged as a multifaceted musician whose career spans composition, singing, orchestral direction, and music production. He received his early musical grounding at home under the guidance of his parents before pursuing formal training in vocal music at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. After completing his academic studies, he moved to Mumbai to pursue wider professional opportunities, where his versatility and musical sensitivity soon gained recognition.

Over the decades, Ashit Desai has composed music for a wide range of creative formats, including theater productions, dance ballets, television serials, and films. A significant phase of his career involved close collaboration with sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar. He was entrusted with composing music for the Asian Games cultural events and later conducted Ravi Shankar’s orchestral works at major international festivals. His role as conductor and singer in Shankar’s ballet Ghanashyam further highlighted his command over large-scale musical presentations.

Ashit Desai also earned wide public recognition for his music direction in the Hindi television serial Chanakya, which remains noted for its strong thematic and classical foundation. His devotional renditions featured in the film Gandhi added another dimension to his body of work. In addition, he has composed music for Hindi and Gujarati cinema, devotional albums, and major dance ballets such as Geet Govind and Ganga, performed by leading classical dancers.

Honored with several prestigious awards, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Ashit Desai continues to be regarded as a musician of depth and integrity. His work stands as a bridge between classical training and contemporary expression, rooted in tradition while addressing modern artistic contexts.
