Biography

Pandit Ashis Sengupta is a dynamic and versatile Tabla maestro of the Banaras gharana, known for his refined sense of laya, clarity of bols and deeply expressive playing. He received his early training from his father, Shri Ranjit Kumar Sengupta. He later came under the guidance of Pandit Nanku Maharaj, Pandit Mahapurush Mishra and Pandit Krishna Kumar Ganguly, inheriting a rich repertoire of traditional compositions, gats and stotras.

Based in New Delhi and performing professionally for over four decades, he is regarded as a much-sought-after accompanist and soloist, sharing the stage with leading vocalists and instrumentalists in India and abroad. He is a recipient of the Taalmani award and a prestigious Senior Fellowship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

Pandit Ashis Sengupta is equally respected as a scholar and educator. He was the first Tabla scholar to receive a PhD in Music from the University of Delhi and has served as a staff artist/teacher in its Department of Music. He is the author of the book Facets of Tabla Playing, which examines technique, repertoire and the history of common thekās in North Indian music, and continues to mentor the next generation of percussionists through concerts, workshops and teaching.
