Biography

Aruna Sairam occupies a distinguished position in Carnatic music as an artist who bridges classical purity with global engagement. Born in Mumbai into a culturally rich Tamil family, she received her early training from her mother, Rajalakshmi Sethuraman, herself a student of the Alathur Brothers and Thanjavur Sankara Iyer. A defining phase of her musical journey began under the guidance of Sangita Kalanidhi Smt. T. Brinda, through whom she absorbed the refined aesthetics of the Veena Dhanammal tradition, marked by emphasis on sahitya, bhava, and melodic subtlety.

Over the years, Aruna Sairam expanded her musical vocabulary through rigorous training with eminent gurus in nereval, swara, and ragam–tanam–pallavi, developing a concert style that is both intellectually rigorous and emotionally compelling. She is widely credited with rethinking Carnatic concert presentation by curating thematic performances and broadening repertoire choices while remaining firmly rooted in classical discipline. Her voice training, refined with guidance from international vocal specialists, has further enhanced her expressive range and stage presence.

Aruna Sairam has performed extensively across India at major cultural institutions and historic venues, including Rashtrapati Bhavan and leading music academies. Internationally, she has represented Carnatic music at prestigious platforms such as the BBC Proms in London, Carnegie Hall in New York, and world sacred music festivals across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Her collaborations with artists from diverse musical traditions reflect her commitment to cross-cultural dialogue without dilution of classical identity.

In addition to performance, she has made sustained contributions as a mentor, writer, and cultural administrator. Through initiatives such as the Nadayogam Trust, she actively supports young musicians and archives pedagogical material. Honored with numerous national and international awards, including the Sangeetha Kalanidhi and Padma Shri, Aruna Sairam continues to shape the global presence and evolving narrative of Carnatic music.
