Anupama Bhagwat

Anupama Bhagwat’s musical journey began in Bhilai, in a home filled with sound—her grandmother’s veena, her father’s violin, and the melodies of classical music that shaped her earliest years. She started learning violin and vocal music at the age of five and began her sitar training at nine under Shri R. N. Verma. Her path took a decisive turn when she came under the guidance of Acharya Pandit Bimalendu Mukherjee, the revered master of the Imdadkhani Gharana. Over two decades of rigorous training in the guru-shishya parampara, she absorbed the depth, grace, and fluency that define this tradition.

A disciple of one of the most visionary teachers of modern Indian music, Anupama imbibed not only technique but also a wider musical philosophy. Her playing reflects mastery over meditative alaap, clarity of raga-bhava, and refined melodic movement, all grounded in tradition. She holds a master’s degree in music from Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya and has received national and international recognition, including the Surmani title, first position in the All India Radio Music Competition, and a Government of India scholarship.

Her performance career spans prestigious platforms in India, such as Dover Lane Music Conference, Saptak, Sankat Mochan Samaroh, Sangeet Research Academy, and Baba Harballabh Samaroh, as well as leading venues worldwide, including Southbank Centre in London, MIT in the USA, Musée Guimet in Paris, and major universities and conservatories across Europe and North America. She has appeared on All India Radio, Doordarshan, and international broadcasters.

Alongside solo recitals, Anupama has engaged in jugalbandis and world-music collaborations while remaining firmly rooted in classical aesthetics. A dedicated teacher and performer, she continues to share the living legacy of her guru, carrying forward the Imdadkhani tradition with clarity, discipline, and artistic integrity.
