Anupam Shobhakar

Anupam Shobhakar is an Indian musician, composer, instrumentalist, and record producer known for his innovative fusion of Indian classical music with Western genres such as jazz, rock, and world music. Born in Kolkata and raised in Mumbai (formerly Bombay), he grew up in a non-professional musical family where Indian classical music was frequently played at home. This early exposure, along with the influence of his grandfather, who was a multi-instrumentalist, helped shape his musical sensibilities. 

From a young age, Shobhakar showed a keen interest in music. His initial exposure, however, was not to Indian classical music but to Western rock and metal bands like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Metallica, and Megadeth. He began learning the guitar and even formed a band called “Dead Sea Scrolls,” performing covers of popular rock musicians. During his early teenage years, he also started exploring jazz and classical music, which broadened his musical perspective. 

Despite his deep involvement in Western music, Shobhakar later rediscovered Indian classical music, which profoundly influenced his artistic direction. He felt that the guitar alone could not fully express the microtonal subtleties of Indian ragas. This realization led him to study the sarod, a fretless string instrument central to Hindustani classical music. He trained under Suresh Vyas and later became a disciple of the renowned sarod maestro Ustad Aashish Khan of the Maihar Gharana. His rigorous training emphasized discipline and technical mastery, preparing him for creative expression in classical music. 

Shobhakar began his professional career in the early 2000s and quickly gained recognition for his unique musical approach. His debut album Mysterious Awakening (2004) showcased a blend of Indian classical elements with Western harmony. He followed this with Wine of the Mystic (2005) and the classical album Dream Theory (2009). Over time, he established himself as a prominent figure in world fusion music, collaborating with artists from diverse musical backgrounds. 

Anupam Shobhakar has performed internationally at major festivals such as the Vancouver Folk Festival, MTV’s Independence Rock Festival in India, and the Muscat Festival in Oman. He has also participated in charitable events, including concerts organized to support disaster relief efforts. His global performances reflect his commitment to bridging cultural and musical boundaries. 

One of Shobhakar’s most notable contributions is his innovation with instruments. He developed a custom double-neck guitar that combines fretted and fretless elements, allowing him to merge the tonal qualities of the sarod with the harmonic richness of the guitar. This invention symbolizes his artistic vision of connecting Eastern and Western musical traditions. 

Currently based in Brooklyn, New York, Shobhakar continues to explore new musical territories. His work has been recognized internationally, and his composition “Water” even reached the first round of the Grammy Awards. Through his recordings, performances, and collaborations, he remains an influential figure in contemporary fusion music, constantly pushing the boundaries of genre and tradition.
