Anup Ghoshal (1944/1945–2023) was an Indian playback singer and composer, associated with Bengali and Hindi cinema, and known for Nazrulgeeti and collaborations with Satyajit Ray.

Biography

Anup Ghoshal (1944/1945–15 December 2023) was an Indian playback singer and composer associated with Bengali and Hindi cinema. He was known in Bengal as an artist of Nazrulgeeti and worked across multiple musical forms, including Thumri, Kheyal, Bhajan, and Rabindra Sangeet.

He began performing at an early age and received training from musicians including Tarapada Chakraborty, Sukhendu Goswami, Debabrata Biswas, and Manindra Chakraborty. He completed his higher studies at Asutosh College and Rabindra Bharati University, where he obtained a Ph.D. with a thesis on Nazrulgeeti.

Ghoshal’s playback career began with Satyajit Ray’s film Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne, and he continued to work on Ray’s projects, including Hirak Rajar Deshe. He recorded songs for Bengali, Hindi, Bhojpuri, and Assamese films.

He received the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for Hirak Rajar Deshe (1981), along with several Bengal Film Journalists’ Association awards. He also served as a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from the Uttarpara constituency.

Anup Ghoshal died in Kolkata on 15 December 2023 at the age of 78.
