Biography

Vinod Shyam hails from the renowned Anoor family of Karnataka, a household deeply rooted in Carnatic music. He is the great-grandson of the celebrated veena exponent Vid. Anoor Shamanna, the grandson of Ganakalabhushana Vid. Anoor S. Ramakrishna, an eminent violinist and revered guru, is the son of Vid. Anoor Ananthakrishna Sharma is one of the most respected mridangam maestros and teachers of the present era. Growing up in this environment, Vinod absorbed music as a way of life and began formal training at the age of ten under Vid. R. Sathyakumar. He later continued advanced guidance under his father, inheriting a direct pedagogical lineage that traces back to Vidwan R. A. Rajagopalan and the legendary T. A. S. Mani.

A B-High-grade artist of All India Radio, Vinod is widely known as a dependable and sensitive accompanist. He has performed with senior artists across India and abroad and remains an active participant in percussion ensembles and cross-genre collaborations. His career includes extensive work in recordings for film, devotional, folk, light classical, and classical music, as well as projects in contemporary dance. He has also contributed to a devotional album directed by noted composer Shri Rajan Nagendra.

Vinod’s achievements include winning the All India Radio competition in 2012, the Best Mridangist Award at the Kalavanta series, the Ananya Nadajyothi Kala Pratibha Puraskara, the Artist of the Year award by Swara Sunada, and top positions in competitions at Chowdaiah Memorial Hall, Bangalore Gayana Samaja, and other leading institutions.

He has performed at major platforms such as Bangalore Gayana Samaja, Ananya, Nadabrahma Sangeetha Sabha, Percussive Arts Centre, Mylapore Fine Arts, and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Internationally, he has toured Qatar, Abu Dhabi, and Europe, including performances in Germany with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band.

Alongside mridangam, Vinod is proficient in pakhawaj, khanjira, tabla, srikhol, dholak, dholki, and rhythm pads. This breadth of command allows him to adapt seamlessly across classical, folk, and contemporary formats, establishing him as a versatile percussionist shaped by tradition and refined through wide-ranging performance experience.
