Anjan Chattopadhyay

Anjan Chattopadhyay is a renowned Indian classical sitar player, recognized for his deep understanding of melody, rhythm, and traditional Hindustani music. He was born in Kolkata (Calcutta), India, into a cultured and aristocratic Bengali family where music played an important role in everyday life. Growing up in such an environment naturally inspired him to pursue music from a very young age. 

Anjan Chattopadhyay began his musical journey under the guidance of his elder brother, Pandit Gourisankar Chattopadhyay, a respected surbahar and sitar player. His brother, being a disciple of Pandit Birendra Kishore Roy Chowdhury, provided him with a strong foundation in the Senia tradition of instrumental music. This early training shaped Anjan’s musical sensitivity and gave him a deep appreciation for the classical structure of ragas. 

To further refine his skills, he received advanced training from the eminent sitarist Vidushi Kalyani Roy, who herself was one of the distinguished disciples of Vilayat Khan. Under her guidance, Anjan developed a refined playing style that emphasized both technical brilliance and emotional expression. He also took lessons in vocal music from Muktipada Datta of the Agra gharana, which helped him incorporate a vocal-like quality (gayaki ang) into his sitar playing. 

In addition to melodic training, Anjan understood the importance of rhythm in classical music. He studied tabla under Ustad Shaukat Ali Khan of the Farukhabad gharana, which strengthened his command over taal and rhythmic improvisation. This multi-dimensional training made him a well-rounded musician capable of delivering both solo performances and collaborative concerts with great finesse. 

Anjan Chattopadhyay has performed extensively across India and abroad. He has appeared at many prestigious music festivals and institutions such as the Dover Lane Music Conference, India International Centre in New Delhi, and the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai. His performances are appreciated for their balance of traditional purity and creative innovation. 

Throughout his career, he has received several awards and honors. He won first prize at the All India Music Competition organized by the West Bengal State Music Academy in 1986 and later received titles like “Surmani” and “Sangeet Visharad.” He was also honored internationally, including recognition from institutions in the United States and citations from state governors for his contribution to Indian classical music. 

Apart from performing, he has also contributed through recordings such as Melodies for the Soul, Raagmala, and Eastern Visions, showcasing his versatility and artistic depth.
