Biography
Amit Kumar, born in 1952, is an accomplished Indian playback singer, composer, actor, and live performer whose career spans several decades of Hindi and regional cinema. Born into a distinguished artistic family as the son of Kishore Kumar and Ruma Guha Thakurta, he was exposed to music from an early age and began singing publicly during Durga Puja celebrations in Kolkata. Recognizing his potential, his father introduced him to the Hindi film industry while he was a child, giving him early experience in both singing and acting.
Amit Kumar’s professional playback career began in the 1970s, and he soon emerged as a leading male voice of his generation. His breakthrough came with Bade Achchhe Lagte Hain from Balika Badhu, composed by R. D. Burman, which established him nationally. His association with Burman proved especially influential, resulting in over 150 recorded songs and defining Amit Kumar’s musical style—energetic, expressive, and adaptable across romantic, folk-based, and upbeat compositions.
Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, Amit Kumar sang extensively for leading actors and collaborated with major composers including Shankar–Jaikishan, Bappi Lahiri, Kalyanji–Anandji, Anand–Milind, Laxmikant–Pyarelal, and Jatin–Lalit. He became the primary playback voice for actors such as Kumar Gaurav and Karan Shah, while also lending his voice to stars like Rajesh Khanna, Anil Kapoor, and Naseeruddin Shah. His duets with Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, and Alka Yagnik were particularly popular during this period.
In the 1990s, Amit Kumar continued to deliver successful film songs but gradually distanced himself from playback singing after the death of R. D. Burman, citing a decline in musical quality. He shifted his focus to live concerts, orchestra shows, and independent albums, performing widely in India and abroad. Alongside music, he remained active in television as a judge on singing reality shows and also worked as an actor and director in select projects.
Recipient of the Filmfare Award for Yaad Aa Rahi Hai from Love Story, Amit Kumar is remembered as a versatile and dependable playback singer whose work bridged generations, carrying forward a musical legacy while establishing his own enduring identity.
