About

Amit Chatterjee is an Indian tabla player trained by Pt. Sankha Chatterjee, known for blending Farukhabad and Punjab gharana styles and performing with leading classical musicians.

Biography

Amit Chatterjee is an Indian classical tabla player recognized for his grounding in both the Farukhabad and Punjab gharanas. He received early and rigorous training under his uncle and guru, Pandit Sankha Chatterjee, who adopted him as a disciple and trained him from the age of five in the guru–shishya parampara.

Growing up in a musically rich environment, Amit had opportunities to interact with and receive guidance and encouragement from several eminent musicians, including the late Ustad Alla Rakha Khan, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit Chinmoy Lahiri, Ustad Munawar Ali Khan, Pandit V. G. Jog, and Pandit Kishen Maharaj, as well as contemporary maestros such as Ustad Zakir Hussain and Ustad Ashish Khan.

His playing reflects a balance of traditional repertoire and openness to experimental contexts, allowing him to work across classical and semi-classical settings.

Academically, Amit is a Commerce (Honours) graduate from Calcutta University and holds the Sangeet Bivakar degree from Bangiya Sangeet Parisad, affiliated with Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. He is a recognized musician of the ICCR (Indian Council for Cultural Relations), New Delhi.

His honors include the Jadhubhatta Award from the Salt Lake Cultural Association (2002) and the Talmani title from Sur Singar Samsad, Mumbai. Through performance and teaching, he continues to contribute to the tradition of Hindustani tabla.
