Biography

Ustad Amir Hussain Khan (1899–1969) was a prominent tabla maestro and an important representative of the Farrukhabad gharana, one of the major traditions in Hindustani percussion. Born in Bankhanda in the Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh, he began his tabla training at the early age of six, developing a strong grounding in traditional repertoire and technique from childhood.

He became known for his deep technical mastery and clarity of bols (tabla syllables). His style reflected the aesthetic values of the Farrukhabad gharana, which emphasizes balance, refinement, and a rich collection of traditional compositions. One of the aspects frequently associated with his musicianship was his ability to perform for extended durations without repeating compositions, demonstrating both memory and creative command over repertoire.

His solo presentations in teentaal, jhaptaal, and roopak were especially appreciated, as these talas allowed him to display both structure and improvisational depth. Through these performances, he contributed to sustaining the traditional solo tabla format.

Beyond performance, he was remembered as a respected guru who transmitted knowledge to students and contributed to the continuity of the Farrukhabad style. His name appears in discussions and collections related to classical rhythm and tabla traditions, reflecting his standing among percussionists.

Ustad Amir Hussain Khan’s legacy rests on his role as both a performer and teacher within the Farrukhabad gharana and on his reputation for discipline, repertoire, and traditional presentation.
